eContentplus programme
On 9 March 2005 the European Parliament and the Council approved the eContentplus Programme, a multiannual Community programme to make digital content in Europe more accessible, usable and exploitable.
The eContentplus programme will make digital content in Europe more accessible, usable and exploitable.
The 4-year programme (2005–08), proposed by the European Commission, will have a budget of € 149 million to tackle organisational barriers and promote take up of leading-edge technical solutions to improve accessibility and usability of digital material in a multilingual environment.
The Programme addresses specific market areas where development has been slow: geographic information (as a key constituent of public sector content), educational content and digital libraries (cultural, scientific and scholarly content), in particular the creation of the European Digital Library.

Call for tenders for a study on Language barriers in the information society launched
The study should investigate how the language affects the accessing, understanding and exploiting of online services and content: what are the (lost) opportunities that could be seized by offering the content and services in the language of the user? What are the remaining technical, institutional, economic and cultural barriers for cross-lingual access? What are the expectations of the users in terms of language coverage? The study should describe, by solid quantitative indicators, how the multilingual dimension is currently addressed in the online domain, identify problems, trends and provide recommendations for the future.
The maximum budget foreseen is EUR 200,000. The time-limit for receipt of tenders is 01 September 2008 (16:00).

Call for proposals for the year 2008 closed
The Commission adopted the eContentplus 2008 work programme and call for proposals on 19 March 2008. The call announcement was published in the Official Journal of the European Union on 20 March 2008 (OJ C 74 of 20.3.2008, p. 62). The deadline for receipt of proposals was 12 June 2008, 17:00 hrs Luxembourg local time. The 2008 call for proposals is now closed.
